The mise en scene of Mr. Xiaos monologue about the purchasing of black market gold occurs following a discussion between Mr. and Mrs. Hou in which they agree to loan Mr. Xiao money based on the sale of items in the apartment. Mr. Hou tells his wife to get Mr. Xiao and the director uses a fade away transition between the two scenes. The scene shift moves from the light and airy apartment of the Hous to a smoke filled room with Mr. Xiao sitting alone in a rocking chair. The use of the smoke following the transition leads the viewer to question what will happen next and consider the origin of the smoke. The director pans down to Mr. Xiao rocking in his chair and smoking his cigarette. Other elements of mise en scene come into play when relating the tone and theme. The setting and the props that are used serve to depict the stark reality of Mr. Xiaos life and the contrast with his idealization of the purchasing of gold. The director uses Mr. Xiaos cigarette and its billowing smoke to emphasize the dark conditions of his life and the fleeting pleasures that are common. Mr. Xiaos costume, which is unmistakably dingy, also emphasizes the contrast that exists. A lasting shot of Mr. Xiaos feet in torn socks is another example of a component of mise en scene that supports the thematic and tonal development of the scene.
