In "Crossing the Line" by Alvin Kernan we are given one such story. It is the story of a young man who enters into the Navy during WWII. The following
paper provides and overview of Kernans work. Crossing the Line Alvin Kernans "Crossing the Line: A Bluejackets World War II Odyssey" is the story of his life as a
young man upon entering the Navy just prior to WWII, in 1940/41. He was a young man from Wyoming, aged 17, who wanted to essentially get out of the economic
depression of Wyoming and see the world, and be involved in the war. As such his story is perhaps the story of many young men in the United States during
the time. He is reflective of the society, the need to find something better in life, and the lure of adventure and honor in the face of wartime.
In this story Kernan spends four years in the Navy. We watch as he leaves "his home and spend four years growing up in
the midst of a war at sea" (Crossing the Line: A Blue Jackets Odyssey in World War Two, 2005). We read as he goes through boot camp training: "His description
of boot camp and shipboard routines suggest that, for him, the Navys often scoffed-at routines were a system that made sense, particularly in combat" (Publishers Weekly, 1994; 60).
