more information on using this paper properly! Cross-cultural competence is a vital resource in any organization. This is especially true when dealing with children or adolescents, for whom cultural
acceptance is often a critical aspect of social integration and performance. Therefore, educators must be able to recognize when cross-cultural skills are required and be able to employ them successfully.
For example, suppose than a first grade teacher, Mr. Weston, had a student, Alana, with various social adjustment issues including withdrawal behavior and the occasional lashing out at classmates, seemingly
without provocation. Attempts to contact the parents end up shedding light on a number of core issues at home, including the fact that Alana and her family, which includes her
mother, father, and three other children, will soon be homeless. This paper demonstrates various risks associated with such an incidence and how cross-cultural competency might be used to mitigate them.
To be sure, Mr. Weston must take into consideration the familys socioeconomic status in attempting to successfully work with Alana and her family. However, other factors must also be
considered, such as Alanas evidenced social adjustment issues, which is important as a significant prerequisite for academic achievement. Issues of access must also be taken into consideration. Alanas mother has
already indicated that the move to the shelter might cause Alana to miss weeks of school; with the added stressors of homelessness, the risk is real that she might stop
attending school altogether. Effectively handling these issues in a culturally competent manner involves making a clear assessment of the potential risks to Alana and her family. First and foremost,
