the concept of the auteur director; genres; and how Cronenbergs dark vision informed the recent film. The Concept of the Auteur The auteur director, to put not too fine a
point on it, is the director whose control of his films is so complete that they are recognizable to audience members, even when those members are not students or critics,
or even particularly well-informed about filmmaking. Films by auteurs are so obvious that even the fanboys get it: they know, without ever seeing the credits, that this is a film
by Quentin Tarantino, for example. They can tell because of the themes he is exploring; the visual choices he makes; the type of characters he explores; the scripting-the entire film
is done in a way that makes it obvious that Tarantino, and no one else, directed it. Auteur directors include people like Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen. Consider: every Woody
Allen film features a Jewish nebbish as its protagonist; they are almost invariably set in New York; and there is a psychological depth to the characters that is often missing
in films today. The protagonist at the heart of Allens films is conflicted, neurotic, and a bumbler who usually manages, somehow, to come out on top. Hitchcocks films are
the same: if we didnt see the credits wed still know it was Hitchcock because of the relentlessly building suspense, and the use of his favorite theme, that of mistaken
identity. In these films, its usually a man who has somehow wound up involved in a murder case, often hes accused of the crime and has to find the real
