Although the country has been accepted as a candidate there have been concerns that the EU expansion should slow down, which places the potential membership of Croatia onto a long term scale, if it is to happen. the EU could become ineffective if it grows too quickly or becomes too large, however what is meant by too quickly or too large is open to debate. There is
little doubt that the new members have benefited from membership, the 8 central European counties all saw their economies grow by more than 5% in the first year of membership
(Economist, 2005). The benefits are not one way as well as the new member states benefiting, the existing states have also benefited, the open market across wide boarders and the
value as well as political power that is created as the result of the single market are all benefits. These may come with some associated costs, such as the relocation
of come businesses and the opening up of labour markets, but the overall benefit is generally agreed upon. The next countries to join the EU are Bulgaria and Romania.
There had been some speculation that the membership, which is due to take place in the 1st of January 2007 would be postponed to 2008, would be postponed, and the
European Parliament had indicates the plans for expansion would be slowed down as the EU would need to resolve its own institutional limitations which had been shown up in the
way that the ascension of Romania and Bulgaria have been handled (Emerging Markets Monitor, 2006). With 27 members in 2007 there are still nation states that have the status of
candidate nation, namely Croatia and Turkey, but of these it is Turkey that has gained the highest level of publicity due to the controversy that the state courts, with a
