widely understood when taken in the context of past civilizations; most everyone knows what it means to look at an "artifact" from an ancient civilization in a museum and make
an inference about the values held by the culture in question. However, the present day values produced in the context of pop culture are just as telling and reveal just
as much about our own societys contemporary values. This means that examining these cultural artifacts is a useful sociological exercise that can reveal aspects of the culture that might otherwise
be obscured from view. According to feminist critic Diana Sellnow, "almost anything is representative of the norms, values, and practices evident in society" (Sellnow 2009, p. 73). Through deeply examining
a contemporary cultural artifact, one may train ones critical faculties to generally regard cultural output with a more critical eye and thus become more insightfully informed about our present-day cultural
values as a whole. With this in mind, this paper will explore the cultural artifact of the music video for the group LMFAOs song, "Sexy and I Know It".
The reasons for choosing this artifact are manifold. First of all, it is an extremely recent artifact, and thus likely to be relevant to contemporary values, which are the object
of exploration in this exercise. "Sexy and I Know It" was released in late 2011, and rose onto a dominant position in the charts in just a short time; a
recent chart release from Billboard listing the top Dance and Electronic songs of the day lists "Sexy and I Know It" as the number one song for 15 weeks straight,
and indicates that it has spent a full 23 weeks on the chart altogether (Billboard, 2012). Moreover, the work has been positively reviewed in Entertainment Weekly and a number of
