piece entitled Crack and the Box has been much discussed, and presents interesting tongue in cheek fare, it really does not consider the true reasons why people take drugs at
all. He links television to crack addiction, noting that whenever he sees addicts, he notices a television on in the background. The work begins with an anecdote of a crack
addict who has children nearby immersed in television. He points out that generations ago, there was no television and drug addiction was not as rampant. Yet, Hamill fails to make
a scientific link between drug addiction and television or even a reasonable one. In fact, the idea that people have become more addicted to drugs because they are engaged in
more passive activities--like television--is ridiculous. Indeed, the presumption borders on an insane notion. It is similar to an individual who says that she can make it rain by going to
the library. Why? Every time she goes to the library, it rains. Of course, anyone with a brain in their head will see that this individual has nothing to do
with the cause of precipitation. Rather, she notices that when she goes to the library it rains. It would be uncanny if every single time she went to the library
it would rain, but there can never be a cause and effect relationship. Similarly, there can never be a cause and effect relationship between television and crack. When watching dramas
that involve drugs, it is rather true that there is often a television on in the background. In real life, in the inner city, Welfare families are provided with cable
television. It is considered almost a necessity for people to have television. It is true that it is a passive activity and that television has been blamed for everything from
