exclusively in addition to five clearly definable steps. The steps are each meticulously defined. Knowing, for example, includes the avoidance of assumptions, focusing on the person being cared for and
involving the self of each participant (1991). Being With includes being there for a person and sharing feelings while Doing For is defined as anticipating, protecting and preserving dignity (Swanson,
1991). Enabling includes focusing and generating alternatives and Maintaining Belief is thought to be equivalent to maintaining hope while offering realistic optimism (1991). After outlining the provisions, and making a
variety of connections to other theories and theorists, the author explains that while caring is probably included in all socially supportive relationships, not all caring relationships are considered to be
social support (1991). This is a very good point. A well-meaning friend or relative may care about a person, but a negative attitude is really not supportive and so caring
in nursing is something that is sorely needed because one cannot rely on the patients external relationships for encouragement. Also, in a nurse-patient relationship, the nurse gives without the expectation
of reciprocation (1991). Thus, a patient need not return the favor, and the patient does not feel obligated to the nurse in any way. In evaluating the theory of caring,
several things should be addressed. According to Chinn & Kramer (1999), in evaluating a theory, one has to see it as something that comprises elements which can form the basis
