Pentagon Papers and LBJ and Vietnam: A Different Kind of War, which was published in 1994. However, his landmark text, which is the basis for most contemporary college courses
on the Vietnam War is Americas Longest War, which was originally published in 1979 and has been perpetually updated ever since. This epic volume chronicles the U.S. involvement in
the Vietnam conflict, which dates back to the Eisenhower administration in 1957. He bluntly describes the war as a tragedy not simply of military proportions but as a national
fiasco of monumental proportions. The Americans had initially envisioned their participation as a heroic ideological crusade. It was this egotism and refusal to accept anything but total success
that sowed the seeds of the most embarrassing defeat in Americas combat history. After World War II, America was clearly an international force to be reckoned with and this optimism
was, according to Professor Herring, not only intoxicating, but blinding. Americas ever growing military industrial complex was largely dictating foreign policy and instead of taking the lead, Presidents were
being relegated to the role of follower. Policymakers envisioned themselves as the caretakers of democracy, and they would do whatever was necessary to contain the spread of global communism,
even if it meant sacrificing American lives in the process. However, what had once been regarded as limited and temporary assistance to the government of South Vietnam became a
