to one that is proactive and can be utilised strategically well documented. The high level of study has resulted in a high level of understanding regarding many human issues concerning
the way employees are managed including issues such as motivation, compensation, recruitment and selection, promotion, training and development and performance management. However, when looking at the studies which have taken
place the majority appear to be based in western, developed nations, where there are commonalities in terms of the cultural context, including similarities in the developmental stages of industrialization and
the evolution of HRM ideas. The research undertaken by Yeganeh and Su (2008) is interesting as it looks at the concept of HRM practices that occur in Iran, where
there is a very different culture and value framework, with influences both Iranian and Islamist culture. The research was undertaken considering the way HRM practices manifest using a number of
established frameworks from which to make a judgment. The value of this is potentially immense, as it allows for the assessment of HRM in a very different cultural context. The
background to the research is well researched. It is noted that there is an attempt to look at the practices against the social context of the area, seeing Iran as
an example of a developing country as well as a divergent culture. The development o modern HRM in the west is seen as part of the process that has as
particularly American. This is an interesting assessment of the development of HRM out of personnel management and even when looking at this it is possible to see where the approaches
