Many adults have turned to the self-directed learning contract as a means of furthering their education through experiential learning. The proper learning contract states learning objectives; delineates how the
learner will meet those objectives; and states how the learners progress will be assessed. Lowrys (1989) article discusses both theoretical frameworks and practical
application of the learning contract approach to adult learning. The Article Lowry (1989) states that
70 percent of adult learning is self-directed, that 90 percent of adults undertake one such endeavor annually, in which they invest about 100 hours. These figures seem to be
inflated to the extent that they could be rejected out of hand had the author not been careful to note that the adults being discussed were middle class. It
is likely that the working-class single parent holding two jobs would find it difficult to devote that much time to such a project.
Lowry (1989) qualifies the stated percentages with information that these learning efforts often are informal, undertaken to gain specific information or learn a new hobby. The author maintains that
whatever the reason an individual takes on such a project, the principles of learning apply. As support, the article lists several of these principles, including learning style and motivational
factors. Conclusion The author is able to eliminate any doubts of the claims she makes
early in the article with sound use of theory and principle. With those requirements satisfied, Lowry (1989) provides specific and reasonable components of the effective learning contract.
