Journal of Education Research, 95 (2), 93-102 The Basics 1. The independent variables are math and reading achievement as well as actual effort and behavior. 2. The
dependent variable is teacher perception in relation to gender, and more specifically the teachers ratings of students math skill level. 3. The research hypothesis is that perceptual bias on
the part of teachers, in respect to gender and in the area of mathematics, is a reality. Authors find that this suggested gender bias is not present after all. The
hypothesis is not proven. Still, researchers do not conclude that gender bias is not problematic solely on the basis of their study. Other literature suggests that gender bias is a
problem and more research is therefore indicated. 4. The operational definition of The independent variables relied on mathematics and reading achievement scores, as well as measures of effort and
behavior ratings. 5. The operational definition of the dependent variable as noted above, is derived with the use of a five point Likert scale. Threats to
External Validity A. Population validity 1. Teacher population Only 15 and 14 third and fourth grade teachers respectively were utilized for study purposes. Thus, although students were utilized in
