theories that are unproven, then reading the material is probably little more than a waste of precious time. This paper critiques two articles about nursing and answers specific questions about
them. Discussion The problem, as stated above, is in determining the usefulness of published material and the purpose of the study is to examine two articles to determine their relevance
and the way they present their findings. A literature review reveals that the research problem in each article is slightly different. In Manojlovichs piece, the problem is finding a way
to determine why nurses perform routine, mundane tasks rather than using their professional training (Manojlovich, 2005). The Leners article is concerned with professional values in nursing (Leners, 2005). The Doutrich
article discusses the experience of Hispanic nurses in the Pacific Northwest (Doutrich, 2005). An article by Stephanie Kirby examines the role Poor Law nurses played in changing values and attitudes
so that the workhouse became a place of therapy, not punishment (Kirby, 2004). An article by Martin et al deals with professional values in training (Martin, 2003). The Campbell article
once again examines how nurses can be empowered, and learn those values in college. Finally, Ann Gallagher discusses dignity with regard to it as a value that nurses need to
respect both in others and in themselves (Gallagher, 2004). But all seven articles center on the nursing experience and how it can be made better, particularly with regard to values.
