The Russian revolution was a very tumultuous time in history for many reasons, but primarily because of the class tensions it created. Russia went from a czarist regime to a communist state in a whirlwind of violence and within a very brief period of time. The end result was that the country was devastated and largely divided because of class, political affiliation, and many other beliefs. Furthermore, the change in regime had a dramatic impact on the traditional bourgeoise ideology that had become so embedded in Russian society. Kollontai intertwines Vasilisa and Vladamir with this historical situation, to create a story that encompasses a vast range of drama. Everything from despair, to hatred, to love, to courage and more are evidenced in this story. It is the marriage of Vasilisa and Vladimir that is the crux of this story, and serves to illustrate the failure of traditional values and beliefs. Furthermore, we see through these characters the difficulty associated with combining their political beliefs with their meaning to one another. But there are even deeper meanings as well. Given the era in which this story takes place, there are plenty of political overtones as well, and this author provides interesting commentary on these issues again through the characters she outlines. The debate between capitalism and communism is a constant struggle both for Russia and for the characters themselves.
