A client was presented to the counseling team who was assessed to have multiple substance abuse, physical and mental health problems. The female client is 25 years of age, of Hispanic origin, homeless and currently unemployed. Assessment of the client found that she is HIV positive, bipolar, has a sexual addiction and also abuses cocaine and alcohol. The client was uncooperative during initial assessment with the counselor. In a critique of the client, it must be determined the possible causes of her afflictions and to what end the counseling team can offer assistance through an education of her symptoms.

Reviewing current research materials, it has been determined that one of the most prominent set of factors facing the patient is that she is both HIV positive and
a substance abuser. Recent research in this area has found that not only is this not uncommon in the HIV positive population but in fact the rate of occurrence of
substance and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the HIV population is 10 percent higher than with the rest of the population. It is estimated that 29 to 60 percent of
HIV infected patients develop AUD sometime throughout their lives (Meyerhoff, 2001). HIV, substance and alcohol abuse are all leading factors in the deterioration of the central nervous system and a
combination of these factors can lead to an increase rate of CNS deterioration which in turn can lead to increased neurological signs and symptoms such as memory loss, decreased concentration
and attention and problems with regular movement or balance (Meyerhoff, 2001). In addition to the damage that HIV and alcohol can cause to the central nervous system, a patients immune
