Participation in Health Care," the report of a study conducted to assess the reading levels of 50 women patients and then judge the reading levels of patient education materials that
the women might receive from health care providers. The purpose of the study was to assess the relevance of a specific clinics instructional materials to the women of the
local area. Problem Statement Gannon and Hildebrandt (2002) provide a problem statement at the outset. The authors explain that, though nurses understand
that patient education is a large part of their job, they frequently are unaware of the literacy level of their patients. The authors state that the average American reads
at an eighth-grade level, and that reading level typically is three years short of grade completed in school. The problem the authors identify
right away is the inability of many patients to comprehend the materials given them to read. Though they may receive verbal information, the inability to read supporting materials robs
them of the ability to reinforce that information themselves. Both of the authors are RNs and so are aware of the difficulties faced
by practicing nurses in this area. Both of the authors also hold advanced degrees: one holds a Masters degree and teaches at a community college, the other holds a
doctoral degree and is associated with a state university. Literature Review The authors do not provide a lengthy literature review, but they do
