men had most of the lead roles at the time ("Women," 2005). This is common knowledge but is not peculiar to the film industry. After all, many industries have favored
men throughout the years and it has only been since the 1960s that opportunities have opened up for women. Still, the situation had been rather obvious in film as motion
pictures did depict all roles in all walks of life. The demeaning characters that were played by female actors to some extent was a reflection of society. As society changed,
more roles opened up for women. It would follow that in this patriarchal society, female actors would not be praised by critics. After all, there is discrimination in the industry.
It is likely that women would not be given a fair chance to make it. However, in examining this issue, it becomes clear that this is far from the case.
In fact, many women were thought to be wonderful actresses. That said, they were generally in stereotypical roles. Within the films themselves, or the roles they played, the men
had been professional whereas the women were generally portrayed as housewives ("Women," 2005). One study that focuses on 100 films in the forties showed that a good majority focused
on the problems that people had in love relationships (2005). There were romantic films but one can surmise that they stereotyped the women as either virgins or whores, with there
being little room in between. When studying films between the 1930s and 1970s, there seem to be four types of roles for women, one of which is
