substantially from those led by our parents. We are confronted on a daily basis with an astounding amount of information. Much of this information comes to us in
an electronic format and much is presented as a mish mesh of truncated thoughts, impressions, and opinions. Many times these messages are in the form of actual advertisements and politics,
many times they are more subtly wrapped in our movies and other mass media presentations. Regardless of the package, however, the effect is the same. The mens magazine
"Maxim" is an excellent example. A typical issue of "Maxim" is filled to the brim with photographs of sexy scantily-clad women. Much of the magazines attention is focused
on celebrities. One recent article, as an example, is titled "Wynona Ryder and Nine Other Nightmare Girlfriends". The man that reads this article for some insight into dating
or criteria that might make an individual particularly suitable as a mate, however, is misguided. This article is anything but the product of an exercise in critical thinking.
The noted article in "Maxim" is really just a collection of photographs of nine celebrity women. Each is captioned with numerous negatives
about the subject. The articles subtitle warns, of course, that being "well plucked" and a celebrity are not necessarily criteria for a good relationship. One can only wonder
when looking through the article, however, just what criteria would be good criteria for anyone as narrow minded and juvenile as the author comes off as being in this particular
piece of mass media. The caption for the photograph of Wynona Ryder, for example, denounces her for her choice in men, asserting that every one has needed a "thorough
