Critical Thinking In 1987, the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking offered a multi-paragraph definition for critical thinking. It included things like being a disciplined process, as applying, synthesizing, analyzing and evaluating information and a number of other activities or characteristics (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2009). If we simplify it a little bit, we find that critical thinking is comprises of two major components. The first is that there is a set of information that is generated and processed and the second is that the individual has an intellectual habit of using their thinking skills to determine their behavior (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2009). Critical thinking must include information and then, some sort of processing of that information. The process could be analysis, evaluation, synthesis, extrapolation, and so forth. Critical thinking is always a self-disciplined act that involves thinking. Critical thinkers work hard to develop the habits that make them critical thinkers. They also know that they will never know everything and that they can always improve their intellectual abilities, including their ability to reason (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2009). However we define or explain it, critical thinking is the top skill human resource managers say they need in their organizations (Chartrand, Ishikawa and Flander, 2009).
