critical theory to change the society. While most research intends to gain an understanding, research under the umbrella of critical theory wants to understand society in a historical context and
it intends to improve society by integrating all major social science fields. It is a theory of contention and controversy (Bohman, 2005; Kincheloe & McLaren, 2002). Fuchs and Sandoval
(2008) conducted a study to investigate how students evaluate the importance of critical thinking. Most of the university students who participated in the study had part-time jobs and were facing
an insecure future in terms of securing a good job after graduation. The researchers believed that critical thinking is not an emphasis in many courses today and it should be.
One question the researchers explored as how important was critical political thinking in todays world. The answer should have an impact on university curriculum. Since there is a goal to
have a systemic impact, this can be considered a study within the critical theory perspective. The authors explain three points of view regarding critique, which refers to critical thinking. Given
the neo-liberal economization of todays world, Fuchs and Sandoval (2008) believe that Marxist critique is important today. This approach demonstrates the dominant role of economic interests in capitalism. The authors
point out that, ontologically, critical theory is materialistic because it is concerned with problems and phenomena as having to do with social struggles and resource distribution and not with absolute
ideas (Fuchs and Sandoval, 2008). Following the arguments of critical theory, society would be viewed as negative and contradictory. This is why research must be focused on the totality of
