It is in the interests of both parties that the franchise is a success but gaining this success may mean more than simply following the franchise formula that worked in the different country, there are more barriers in the international environment. There is a plethora of data that shows proven franchisees are more likely to succeed as the franchisers have already learned many lessons and overcome barriers, lessening the length of the learning curve for the franchisees (Anonymous, 2005). However, in international regions, especially where the franchises are the first in a area, there will be many hidden barriers, form the unknown or difficult tax systems and business infrastructures to divergent cultures (Gerson, 2004). There are a number of propositions put forward as the keys to the success of franchises in East Asia, where there is a divergent consumer and business culture which, when combined with the large distances involved for western style franchise can be a challenge. To assess the required factors this paper will undertake 4 case studies into businesses that are franchised and consider some of the critical success factors for franchises to be successful in East Asia.
