In theory, the principals used by critical practitioners can be applied across many disciplines as they use critical approaches to solve problems in any setting in which a functioning practical model must devised in order to create a more efficient work environment. Critical practitioners have many aspects to consider in their critical analysis of a situation. In relation to an education or a social services environment, the role of the critical practitioner would be to: identify, articulate and reflect on personal beliefs on the roles of the services provided in their society; implement practices that are congruent with personal beliefs and values which are appropriate in the services provided; implement practices which are sensitive to issues of social, cultural and gender equity; engage in critical discourse with all involved regarding the appropriate use of the services; critical evaluate service designs and their implications; critically evaluate potential uses of services to support further programs/services in the future; and critically evaluate the roles of the services regarding any possibility of extending the services outside of the agency (Competencies, 2002). In many ways the critical practitioner cannot stand alone and must combine their expertise of critical analysis in regards to other sociological, psychological, medical or political situations which arise in the implementation of assessment of any service. During a recent study in Namibia, a critical practitioner inquiry was implemented when Namibia became an independent nation in 1990 and the government wanted to create a national reform to rid the country of apartheid and colonial education (Dahlstrom et al, 1998).
