any farther than our President-elect, Barack Obama, to find a person who took a stand and made a difference. The Republicans, in particular their nominee for Vice President, Sarah Palin,
got a lot of mileage out of making fun of Barack Obamas work as a community organizer in Chicago (Lyden, 2008). They implied that just because someone went out into
the community and worked at what is widely recognized as a low-paying, thankless job, he was unfit for higher office (Lyden, 2008). They also decried the efforts of thousands of
Americans who also work in their communities; apparently believing that the only way to get anything done is to have a lot of money and a huge campaign behind the
effort. The Republicans found out just how wrong they were in November, when Barack Obama won the White House and gave community organizers everywhere a boost. According to Mike Kruglik,
who worked with Obama in Chicago, one of his first efforts was "trying to help people get jobs. We created what was called the Regional Employment Network" (Lyden, 2008). The
first meeting of the organization brought out "a couple of thousand people" (Lyden, 2008). Another article also talks about Obamas efforts to help people in Chicago, referring to his work
at the Altgeld Garden public housing development (Block, 2008). Community organizing is one way Chicagoans get things done politically, and part of the process is taking on "city hall" (Block,
2008). Organizers frequently find themselves fighting the citys "machine," and for Barack Obama, "the battle ground centered around the Altgeld Gardens public housing complex" (Block, 2008). It was his goal
