Lung Health Study that assessed mortality rate changes following participation in a smoking cessation program after 5 years would have different outcomes if assessed for a longer period of time.
The researchers identified a research question, which was "whether a smoking cessation program and use of inhaled ipratroium would decrease the rate of decline of lung function and would affect
mortality and morbidity rates" after 14.5 years, almost three times longer than the initial study. The researchers determined the need for their study after interventions-to-treat, including the use of
inhaled ipratropium and smoking cessation programming did not appear to have an impact on morbidity mortality rates after five years among participants in the treatment group. The researchers pursued
this randomized clinical trial in order to determine whether smoking cessation in conjunction with treatment-related inhaled ipratropium was associated with a notable reduction in fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular disease and
or coronary heart disease when assessing patients 14.5 years after the initial randomization (Athonisen et al., 2005). The researchers described the selection of the subject population from individuals
receiving services at 10 clinical centers and the initial participant population of 5887 Canadians and Americans, who were randomly assigned to three groups. The distinction was made between two
specific intervention groups and the third group that received usual care. The first two groups received intensive 10-week smoking cessation program intervention that included 12 two hour group sessions,
specific physician messages and the use of behavior modification techniques in conjunction with nicotine gum (Athonisen et al., 2005). In concert with this process, individuals who were successful in
achieving smoking cessation were then provided support through the use of an intervention group strategy that focused on the development of long-term coping skills. One of these two intervention
