Harriet Beecher Stowe buried her youngest child Charley. A combination of rage against slavery and the deep grief she felt over the loss of her son culminated in the
writing of one of the most controversial texts of all time, Uncle Toms Cabin. Stowe presented the issues of slavery from her abolitionist perspective and also drew upon her
Christian upbringing to portray the oppression and enslavement of Africans in the American South as not only a political and social problem but one with which the highest moral consequences
were attached. The authors central thesis was that as long as Americans refused to turn a blind eye to slavery, the true freedom and democracy the Founding Fathers promised
in the Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution would never be fulfilled. Stowes message, clearly articulated in the books Preface, argues for immediate reform that goes against the teachings
of Christianity rooted deeply into the religious, political, and social fabric of America. Harriet Beecher Stowes central thesis is that slavery is always evil and can never be justified.
This thesis is expressed through a classic showdown of good versus evil that takes place when Marie St. Clare sells her slave Tom to the sadistic and unscrupulous plantation
owner Simon Legree. While the slave Tom is Christ-like and the epitome of goodness, the master is inhumane and more akin to Satan. The conflict is expressed in
religious terms to emphasize its ethical centeredness. Parallels are drawn between Legrees plantation and the psalm that reads in part, "The dark places of the earth... full of the
