None of Miss Dickinsons poems were published in her lifetime, as she wished, and it was only after her death in 1886, when her sister Lavinia discovered a collection of over 1,000 poems that the world learned of Emily Dickinsons gentle artistry and powerful prose. Dickinson thought constantly about the human condition, and how it was influenced both positively and negatively by nature and religion. Dickinson was fascinated by the Transcendentalist movement of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau that was deeply rooted in her Puritan New England social landscape. This trilogy of themes cemented the creative foundation of Dickinsons work and her preoccupation with them only increased with the passage of time. Her experiences were shaped by the times in which she lived. The majority of her poems were penned during the years of the Civil War, 1861-1865, and this period of death, destruction, and the inevitable question of why left an indelible imprint on Emily Dickinsons life and art. She felt this suffering with every fiber of her soul and it was this heart-felt emotion that elevated her works from ordinary to the ranks of extraordinary. Music had long played an important role in Emily Dickinsons life, and her mastery of musical technique is quite evident in her works. They have a musically-metered quality when read aloud that is reminiscent of a piano solo (Baym 2489). Like musical compositions, which often contain sudden pauses for dramatic impact, so, too, do many of Dickinsons poems, which force the readers to take a moment and ponder her message (Baym 2490). ...
