Other books and stories by Hemingway have been explicated and criticized in numerous ways as some argue he was a chauvinist and others arguing that his work was incredibly depressing and repetitive, if not predictable in its depiction of a Lost Generation. However, The Old Man and the Sea is perhaps his only work that has been explicated for its symbolic worth rather than its success as a piece of literature. The following paper presents a critical analysis of Hemingways The Old Man and the Sea. Critical Analysis: The Old Man and the Sea In relationship to any negative commentaries that were located, in relationship to Hemingways The Old Man and the Sea, one author presents a commentary by a critic at the time the story was published. The author refers to statements made by Hemingway heralding the arrival of his book in Life Magazine and the critic is obviously not enamored with the novelette: "Its unlikely that Hemingway read The Old Man and the Sea 200 times; the rest of the final paragraph is embarrassing, as is the novelette" (Bruccoli; Hemingway; Baughman 121). This critic was responding to a statement made by Hemingway wherein he claimed he read the book 200 times and each time he read it he gained something new from the reading, essentially remarking what a wonderful work it was he had created.
