The first line of the classic Moby Dick is the immortal "Call me Ishmael," who turns out to be the lone survivor of the ship Pequod. It is Ishmael who
tells the story of Ahabs obsession with finding and killing the white whale that took his leg and bested him at every turn. Moby Dick is possibly one of the
most unsettling books ever written since it delves deeply into psychosis and obsession, both of Ahab and his crew. Captain Ahab is willing to give his life to kill the
whale, and his crew has pledged itself to him and is willing to follow him on this soul-destroying quest. The idea of ordinary seamen agreeing to die to defeat what
is essence a force of nature is disturbing at best and terrifying at worst. The idea that Ahabs madness has infected the entire ship is compelling, and may well be
one reason why the book continues to fascinate readers. And it is Ishmael who tells the tale, since he is the only survivor of the sinking. But he says not
"I am Ishmael," but "Call me Ishmael," which means Ishmael may not be his real name. In essence, then, we dont know whos telling the story; the narrator is someone
