The title is deliberately provocative: "casuistry" is often defined as using subtle and misleading arguments to confuse an issue (Casuistry); while the "slippery slope" argument (if a person A does
action X, he will invariably progress to action Y; i.e., anyone who smokes marijuana will invariably go on to hard drugs) is a logical fallacy. A glance at the title
doesnt tell us if he is advocating these positions, or if he attributes them to the proponents of the research; its necessary to read the piece carefully to understand what
Fr. Kennan is saying but fortunately, he is quite clear. He begins with a statement of what he intends to prove. He says that those who are in favor of
producing human embryos for research "fail in three ways to make their case" (Kennan). He says they "do not provide a standard to legitimate the new endeavors"; he also says
they contradict their own legitimacy by the practices they employ; and they do not have any safeguards against abuse of the practice (Kennan). He then says that he will discuss
the first issue under the heading of casuistry; the second under virtue; and the third as a slippery slope argument (Kennan). It is his stated purpose here to suggest specific
arguments that the proponents of the research can make in support of their position. If he is going to accomplish this purpose, then he really should show that the
arguments of those who are in favor of developing embryos for research are using casuistry to make those arguments, a questionable technique; then he has to show that they are
