American literature. It is a story that is relevant because of its historical perspectives as it details the lives of women during the Civil War and it is a story that serves to offer up the social conditions in America in the history of the nation. It is, in essence, a story about identity, truth, passion, life, and family, to mention but a few of the thematic elements in the novel. Considering that it has been such a classic since its authorship in the late 19th century, it comes as no surprise that there are many different critical analyses of this work. The following paper presents a literary review of four different articles or criticisms which examine this novel and/or the author herself. Little Women Analysis #1 The first analysis comes to us through the critical site of Sparknotes which, in this particular case, discusses the themes of the novel. In Alcotts novel this author indicates that one of the primary themes is the struggle between familial duties and the need for personal growth, or the search for ones own unique identity. We see that this critic indicates that although the story may appear to be nothing more than a pleasant story about the four daughters and their mother, "Little Women centers on the conflict between two emphases in a young womans life-that which she places on herself, and that which she places on her family" (Sparknotes). The novel places a great deal of emphasis on the need to deal with domestic duties and that the family itself often distracts the women from finding themselves. The critic notes, for example, that with Jo and sometimes Amy, the need to perform the duties required of them at home often stops them from finding themselves or interfering with their search. ...
