1. What impact can the media have on the ability to manage a crisis? The
media can have a phenomenal impact on the ability to manage a crisis. Gerald Levin, chief executive of AOL Time Warner, sees the power wielded by the media as
potentially becoming more powerful than that of governments themselves (Williams, 2006). Unfortunately, the media is not always regarded in a wholly positive light. Williams (2006) describes the
top five multiconglomerate media corporations as "hydra-headed monsters" that have the ability to "influence governments, culture and the way we obtain accurate information about the world". The media, however,
is not only the primary interface between the government and the general public during times of crisis, it is a critical interface. It serves to announce the problem, what
is being done about it, and what the public should be doing. While the worlds top five media corporations control both
electronic and print forms of the media, it might be contended that their electronic broadcasts in particular are among the most important tools in the governments arsenal in crises management.
