situation, it is equally important in the scheme of things. Cultural competency "encompasses as set of congruent behaviors, practices, attitudes and policies related to embracing cultural differences and integrates
them into the agencys culture" (Mays, DeLeon Saints & Viehweg, 2002 as cited in Barrett & George, 2004, p.428). Cultural competency is another way of saying that people must be
tactful and understanding in a multicultural environment. One may suggest that crisis communication is even more important and this is arguably true, but cultural competency can be very important in
some situations. One good example is the crisis that occurred on September 11, 2001. The event was disastrous and communication was something that was hindered a great deal. People could
not get through to their loved ones and there were many rumors floating about. Because some people did not realize there was a terrorist attack at first, there were unfortunate
events that followed. Improved communication would have perhaps saved lives. Cultural competency was also important during that event because the situation involved race. The terrorists were generally a part of
a national culture that was suddenly suspect. People who came from the Middle East were taunted by their neighbors and this was an unfortunate result. Cultural competency would have gone
a long way to ameliorate the effects of 911 and to be fair, the government was proactive in trying to calm the people as it warned against retaliation. The
events of 911 are larger than life. In business, smaller issues will occur that do not necessarily involved loss of life or significant risk but nevertheless can make use of
