while the lack of social bonds can lead to an individual committing crimes. Travis Hirschi introduced the social bond theory of criminality in 1969. Hirschi argued that people are
born with the hedonistic drive to do what they can to get what they want (Pratt, Gau & Franklin, 2011). In other words, humans have a natural urge to
be selfish and aggressive if that is what it takes to get what they want. Since we all have the capacity to commit crimes we need to consider what keeps
a person from committing a crime. His answer was prosocial bonding (Pratt, Gau & Franklin, 2011). These bonds can be developed with other people, prosocial values, and prosocial institutions.
Moral and social bonds are developed over a lifetime and when people have strong prosocial bonds, they are less likely to commit crimes whereas people who lack these prosocial bonds
are more likely to commit crimes (Pratt, Gau & Franklin, 2011). Hirschi identified four types of bonds: attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. These four coalesce over a lifetime and serve
to keep a person from committing crimes (Pratt, Gau & Franklin, 2011). Attachment relates to the attachments or psychological affection one forms with other people and institution. People have psychological
affection for their families, friends, school, church or others, for instance. The others must also be prosocial. The commitment bond refers to the individuals need to not jeopardize their relationships
by committing a crime (Pratt, Gau & Franklin, 2011). Hirschi said that people are less likely to commit crimes when they are likely to lose something they value, like
