year as a juvenile, and then I hung out. I liked it" (qtd. in Sischy, 2004, p.126). One cannot imagine that this sort of contempt could land one in juvy.
Breaking a pencil appears to be rather innocent, but it was done to disrespect the judge and labeled criminal mischief. The term criminal mischief brings up a lot of emotional
and anecdotal ideas. One remembers the terminology "mischief maker" in respect to labeling boys when they are young. They seem to get into mischief as toddlers and preschoolers. It seems
to be a rather innocent and playful term. Of course, criminal mischief is anything but; however, the term is used almost as a catchall for anything that is not as
bad as say, assault, but is still bad enough to be a crime. Criminal mischief is on one hand a serious charge, but on the other, may be achieved for
seemingly innocuous activity. Graffiti artists are engaging in criminal mischief. They are committing crimes for which there is no niche and so, the activity is labeled as criminal mischief. It
is a mischievous act indeed as they do not have permission to paint. Criminal mischief has also been aligned with hate crimes in New York of late and also comes
