3 pages in length. The importance of crime data is to determine trends of criminal activity in specific areas during specific times. These reports provide critical information for criminal justice practitioners and criminologists by offering a sequential look at the manner by which crimes are committed by correlating such variables as frequency, proximity and other demographic statistics. The extent to which crime data reports enable criminologists and criminal justice practitioners to gain an understanding of criminal activity is both grand and far-reaching; that such information further creates a basis upon which they can sometimes stay ahead of the criminal and thwart the offense before it happens speaks to the inherent value of utilizing crime data reports. justice practitioners and criminologists by offering a sequential look at the manner by which crimes are committed by correlating such variables as frequency, proximity and other demographic criteria. The extent to which crime data reports enable criminologists and criminal justice practitioners to gain a significantly better understanding of criminal activity is both grand and far-reaching; that such information further creates a basis upon which they can sometimes stay ahead of the criminal and thwart the offense before it happens speaks to the inherent value of utilizing crime data reports. For example, statistics from the Texas Department of Public Safety indicate that in the year 2003, significantly more white offenders committed crimes when compared to their minority counterparts. A sampling of these findings illustrates how six hundred and thirty whites committed murder as opposed to two hundred thirty-six blacks and three hundred forty-seven Hispanics; forcible rape was committed by three times more whites than blacks and more than twice than Hispanics (1,761; 558; 832, respectively); burglary reflected 14,453 (whites), 4,472 (blacks), 6,855 (Hispanics); and motor vehicle theft was nearly six thousand for whites, almost three thousand for blacks and just over twenty-five hundred for Hispanics (Texas Department of Public Safety, 2003). Based upon the information found in this crime data report that illustrates a significant discrepancy between blacks and Hispanics, criminologists and criminal justice practitioners can utilize the information to better understand the correlation between minority offenders and a larger Hispanic population due to the proximity of Texas to the Mexican border. The rate of recidivism is another beneficial indicator of crime trends found in data reports. Criminal justice practitioners and criminologists utilize this information to determine trends (increases and/or decreases) in overall criminal activity that occurs within a given area or type of crime.
