Unit for the Harris county Sheriffs Office is part of the Detective Bureau and also comes under the general heading of covert operations (Harris county Sheriffs Office, 2004). In Ohio,
this unit falls under the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (Petro, 2003). The Bureau is organized into three separate divisions: identification, laboratory and investigation and criminal intelligence is in the investigative
division (Petro, 2003). In Ohio, the Superintendent of the Bureau is appointed by the State Attorney General (Petro, 2003). These units have slightly different responsibilities as well as different
reporting procedures, depending on where they are located. One of the commonalities is that they all gather, analyze and disseminate information about criminal activities. Some may focus primarily on organized
crime and drug-trafficking organizations, others may work this these categories but also gather and analyze information and data concerning offenses by individuals. Still others may also have the responsibility of
providing security for visiting dignitaries. As an example, the Criminal Intelligence Unit for the Leon County Sheriffs Office is part of the Criminal Investigations Bureau but it is also
identified as "a support function for the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) by providing the Team Commander with on-scene tactical intelligence involving any incident where the SWAT team responds"
(2004). This unit provides the SWAT team with "up to the minute information on suspects and any other information that could possibly impede the team" (Leon County Sheriffs Office, 2004).
