The American correctional system is considered one of the most advanced in the world. That said, it needs to
be asserted that our correctional system is one of the most ineffective. The purpose of a correctional system, after all, is to enforce societal laws. Not only is
our crime rate astounding, so is the recidivism rate. The faults of our correctional system are particularly obvious when we compare it with that of Japan.
Although she is one of the most densely populated nations on the earth yet their crime rate is phenomenally low in comparison to other equally developed
countries. Homicides, rapes, and armed robberies alike are all just a small fraction of what occur in the U.S. Even more astonishing is the fact that this lower
crime rate is associated with almost none of the police corruption and brutality which is too often a component of our own system.
There are several reasons for the differing effectiveness of the Japanese and US correctional systems. In the US it seems that the goal is to do what little we
have to do to keep from being caught from breaking a law. That doesnt mean we dont break laws, only that we do so in a way to keep
