Blue, CSI and Law & Order. After watching the news, and some prime time entertainment, it is no wonder that people perceive the world to be unsafe. Yet, is media
beneficial to society in its reporting of crime, or does it exacerbate crime? Clearly, it does a little of both, but it seems that when all is said and done,
crime in the media is more of a positive than negative experience. Still, both sides of the issue warrant attention. Psychologists back up the premise that if one is exposed
to crime, it provides a basis to rationalize fear. The "mean-world syndrome" is said to occur when children who are exposed to television violence develop a view of the world
as more dangerous or sinister than it actually is (Chidley, 1996). A similar effect has been reported in adults, particularly among the elderly (1996). This observation makes the argument to
keep the violent shows on for adult audiences less credible. Adults as well as children are affected by an immersion in violence, whether it is real life or on television.
The primary concern of course is televisions effects on children as they are malleable and have little life experience. Thus, television unfortunately becomes their major source of information as well
as entertainment. It is hard to say whether or not media is doing its job. For example, some may argue that the news channels are supposed to report the news.
