all of societys woes. Crime is essentially something that is done against the status quo, and something that is against the law. Crime may be viewed as a social
problem. First, in accepting that fact, it pays to explore the definition of a social problem. It is hard to define just what a social problem is, but
it is thought to be a circumstance where a group defines a social situation and then there is a threat to the groups values ("Toward," 2003). The threat can usually
be thwarted by social action (2003). As a social problem, crime is related to other problems. For example, crimes involving drugs are related to other social problems such as drug
abuse and how that affects families and individuals. It affects pregnant women as well. One can see how one social problem can mushroom and cause others. Another example is gambling.
Gambling is illegal but there are social clubs and other venues where gambling goes on in districts in which it is outlawed. Gambling can cause a variety of social problems
as it drains compulsive gamblers and their families of needed funds. Thus, with severe economic problems, families that contain gamblers can find themselves in a great deal of trouble. They
may not be able to pay their bills and this can create more criminology such as borrowing from loan sharks and the like. Many areas that are physically deteriorating often
contain a great deal of crime and a myriad of social problems such as drug abuse, teen pregnancy, unemployment and alcoholism. Crime is also related to many social problems
because organized crime groups tend to fund illegal activity. They may be behind gambling dens, houses of prostitution and the like. With prostitution rings, women sell their bodies and this
