York as bad places to visit--where illegal activity is rampant--it should be noted that even in suburbia, gangs and drugs are prevalent in twenty-first century America. New Jerseys Cumberland County
for example is a place where many would not expect to see gang activity and drug use, but that is far from the case. In focusing on the metropolitan area
of this county, or Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton, what can one say about gang activity and drug use in the region? An example of a problem in respect to drugs has to
do with the overwhelming amount of marijuana that is trafficked through the country. This region is especially vulnerable to the marijuana trade. Law enforcement officers, for example, have identified both
indoor and outdoor cannabis that is grown within rural New Jersey ("National drug," 2001). Cumberland county for example reports cannabis cultivation (2001). Also, what happens in these very rural
areas is that drug distributors will generally hide cannabis plants in a farmers field and replace the corn stalks with cannabis plants (2001). They sometimes quite cleverly plant the cannabis
between rows of corn (2001). Drugs are certainly a problem in New Jersey, and while many people think of the state as rather rural or suburban, the state has its
share of problems. In fact, in addition to boasting beautiful suburban areas, and vacation spots, the state has deteriorating neighborhoods like Camden and the once chic Asbury Park. Asbury Park
for example has turned into a ghost town and is now an area that has boarded up homes and stores as opposed to new restaurants and hotels. Thus, New Jersey
