2000 paper properly! Debates on crime and punishment linger. Capital punishment is seen as something that
is evil by groups who contend that killing will just bring more killing. Others contend that punishments should fit the crimes and that the death penalty is applicable in some
cases. Massachusetts in no different. The debate is furious there. In 1997, a law reinstating the death penalty was almost passed but ultimately failed. However, the ideology present in the
states past is not consistent with its present thinking. Digging back into the early history of Massachusetts, the Puritans who ran the Massachusetts Bay Colony made the crimes of adultery,
witchcraft and fomenting rebellion, punishable by death (Zabarenko PG). In digging through past histories of any jurisdiction, there will be many interesting finds, particularly when looking at the nineteenth
century. But when it comes to breaking the law, nothing much changes from century to century (McCutcheon 265). Crime is a fact of life but just as there are changes
in ideology about punishment, there is often changes in types of crimes committed. The most common reason for arrests in the 1800s had to do with intoxication, disorderly conduct
and assault among other things (265). The following chart shows Crime Statistics for Boston, Massachusetts during the second part of the nineteenth century ("Boston, Massachusetts" PG):
