Our world has evolved overnight into one in which we can seldom find privacy. The use of cameras to record our every move
is one of the most recent developments. Everything from infrared to closed circuit television has been employed in the effort to dissuade criminals before they act and to catch
them when they do commit a crime. While there are certainly negative consequences associated with the use of cameras in practically every social setting, negative consequences that will be
discussed below, its not just common sense that tells us that cameras are an effective tool in criminal justice, research has demonstrated it as well.
Goold (21) reports that by 2002 over one million cameras dotted the British urban landscape alone. He estimated that an additional five hundred cameras were being installed
weekly in British towns and cities (Goold 21). In Canada 1200 new cameras were to be installed by the end of 2005 in Quebec and an additional 3000 in
the transport system will be added to the 800 already in operation (Srikanthan 24). The U.S. is in the process of
