the adult. In addition, adolescence is a time of exploration, of "testing the bounds" and breaking free of restrictions set by parents, schools, churches and other authorities. It
is also a time when peer influence is at its strongest, and even the most level-headed teenager can have trouble making sound decisions when pressured by friends to indulge in
questionable behavior. There are many reasons why young people behave badly, but perhaps one of the most pervasive is the fact that they have a terrifying illusion of
invulnerability. Death, permanent disability and other difficult facts of life have no reality for them at their age, and so they are careless of their own safety as well
as that of others. The acts adults condemn as reckless and stupid are more likely the result of the belief that most youngsters have in their own immortality than
any real understanding of the possible consequences of dangerous behavior. In addition, adolescents are trying to discover "who they are"; its a trite phrase but accurate, because at that time
of life they are still uncertain of themselves in many areas: they may have doubts about their sexuality; their mental and emotional abilities to cope with life; their career
possibilities; and other issues. They also dont seem to understand that older people were once young, and therefore understand the kinds of upsets they are facing. They feel
isolated and cut off from everyone but their peer group, which gives that group an immense power over the individuals of which it is composed. It is that power
