innate classifications can represent significant social power, as in the case of beauty, wealth and status, or they can symbolize aspects of society that people would just as soon forget,
such as criminal activity. For delinquents to become able to fully function within a society that expects perfection from those who least possess it, the presence of myriad internal
and external considerations reflects the protective shield. It can readily be argued that each and every person represents one subculture or another -
that is to say that while the masses as a whole represent the culture, the individuals who make up that culture in turn represent other subcultures, as well. In
this light of understanding, one can then surmise that everyone - at one time or another - displays deviant behavior. However, deviance that inflicts physical and/or psychological harm upon
another being or property is crossing the boundaries of acceptable behavior (Anonymous, 2002). To stray from the norm is to deviate from socially
acceptable behavior; when one is deviant, he goes against the very essence of what society has deemed acceptable. One of the easiest things in life is to deviate from
what is considered by the masses to be normal; in fact, Morpheus points out that it is often considerably more difficult to remain upon a straight and narrow path with
the myriad obstacles that appear in daily life. The student can readily argue that deviant behavior has found its niche within contemporary society, even to the point of infiltrating
what is considered to be a standard of normalcy (Anonymous, 2002). The concept of a rational society, in which the entire community is
