to understand crime trends in Georgia, it is necessary to look at various parameters, as well as the factors affecting crime and the theories that explain the socioeconomic factors involved.
With the dire nature of global warming grabbing headlines, urban transportation planners are in consensus that the best way to reduce air pollution and automotive congestions in urban areas
if to expand the public transportation system. While Atlanta has city busses, its principal method of public transportation is the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), a rail system. It
has been the experience of Atlanta city planners that community groups have frequently opposed the building of new stations for the system because of the belief that such stations increase
crime (Ihlanfeltdt, 2003). Therefore, Ihlanfeltdt (2003) conducted an extensive study of the relationship between station access and Atlanta neighborhood crime rates. This study found that MARTA station access can
be associated with an increase in crime in inner-city areas or in communities that are both close in proximity to poor neighborhood and not high in income (Ihlanfeltdt, 2003). Therefore,
efforts on the part of city planners to attract both people and employment opportunities to the central city with improved MARTA access are likely to be thwarted unless greater police
deterrence is provided as well (Ihlanfeltdt, 2003). However, the study also shows that improved rail access reduces crime in more affluent suburban areas (Ihlanfeltdt, 2003). In proposes causes for this
