considering prevention programs. Understanding these considerations is important, because not doing so can easily lead to the failure of a program. Crime Prevention in Australia
Crime is a very serious social issue, as it affects the physical, social, emotional and financial well-being of individuals and communities as a whole
(Indigenous & Family Violence, 2003). Australia has taken a very aggressive role in trying to prevent crime, by instituting a wide range of programs (Indigenous & Family Violence, 2003).
The Government has taken a strong leadership role in the prevention of violence and crime, working in collaboration with
all levels of government and with the business and community sectors. One of its major initiatives in this area is the National Crime Prevention Program (NCPP) which was launched
in 1997 by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP. In the 1999-2000 Budget, the Government committed a further $21 million over four years to the program. The
NCPPs objectives are to identify and promote innovative ways of reducing and preventing crime and the fear of crime. The program includes both research and practical initiatives including, national pilot
projects, local prevention activities, communication and training initiatives (Crime Prevention and the Commonwealth Government, 2003).
