One of Cretes most important characteristics is the extent to which it exported such tangible commodities as timber, olive oil, wine, currants, herbs, wool and cloth. Moreover, with imports as copper, ivory, silver, gold, tin, precious stones and various other raw materials, Cretans were able to construct final products such as bronze alloys (History of Minoan Crete). Artistic offerings came in many forms, however, none were quite as representational of Cretan culture as the frescoes which not only graced the palace walls of affluent Cretan families but also those in Thera, Melos, Kea and Rodos. Later on, during the time of Doric Crete, a distinctive Oriental flavor began to exude from various forms of artistic expression - exhibiting itself in what came to be known as the "Geometric" period, which is attributed to some degree to Cretes "proximity and close commercial ties with the East" (History of Minoan Crete). Mesopotamia and Egypt shared some common features that encouraged their initial growth and continued development overtime, which also served to contribute to their unique characters. In determining the similarities that demonstrated how the inhabitants utilized their environment, there are myriad considerations one can assess; after all, developing any congregation of peoples requires the germinating of many cultural seeds. Much exists within the framework of creation so as to afford the inhabitant an opportunity to move forward with an ongoing sense of prosperity and ingenuity.
