man who tries to do what is right, but inadvertently finds himself the victim of destiny and preordained realities. One of the primary character in the story, and a character who serves to benefit from Oedipus demise, is Creon. The following paper examines and analyzes the character of Creon in Sophocles "Oedipus the King." Creon in "Oedipus the King" In Oedipus story one is presented with the story of a man, a king, who finds out that he has ignorantly fulfilled a prophecy wherein he kills his father and marries his mother. He does not know that this is what he has done, for he left his mother and father (adopted mother and father) in hopes of never fulfilling that prophecy. However, not knowing who his real father and mother were led him to a position where he did fulfill the prophecy. Because he killed the king, without knowing it, and then married the queen, who was his mother, he became king. This is where Creon comes in. And, interestingly enough, for those who follow the work of Sophocles, his classic "Antigone" also has Creon within, and although "Creon in Antigone is a very different character from Creon in Oedipus," Creon is the king in the story that follows "Oedipus the King" (The Classics Pages: Antigone). Before Oedipus came onto the scene it seems that Creon may well have had a chance of becoming king one day. However, now that Oedipus is in the picture Creon is again simply a court official. For the most part he seems like a reliable and somewhat insignificant individual, perhaps presented only to offer a voice for information that Oedipus demands.
