In Creolising Roman Britain, Jane Webster looks at the ways in which the acculturation of minority and majority groups took
place under Roman rule, and whether the previous studies of Romanisation could be said to be accurate in terms of the way that they portrayed cultural change during the Roman
occupation or whether there were other ways of looking at the interaction between the indigenous population and the Roman population.
The concept of Romanisation, which has for many years remained the predominant model for illustrating the process
of cultural change in Roman provinces, has recently been challenged in terms of the way that it relates to the majority populations of the provinces. For example, the
way in which acculturation takes place in terms of the population adopting the symbols of the dominant culture is now considered to follow a different pattern depending on whether the
population group is part of the majority or of the elite.
