water and air that encircles the globe. Within that tiny space, species of animal and planet life vie with each other for existence, with one particular strain of hairless
primate seemingly intent on killing as much of the other species as possible. Considering the awful threat of this intelligent, predatory race, the best survival strategy for a competing intelligent,
but less ruthless, species would be to hide -- possibly in plain sight. Jessie had always been small for her age, yet, surprisingly, she never exhibited the symptoms
of dwarfism, or any of the other known disorders associated with growth. Her arms and legs, torso and head were perfectly proportioned for her size, but her whole body was
incredibly petite. Small boned, yet not undernourished, Jessie was two feet tall at the age of ten and added only a mere four inches more by age twelve. Her
eyes were luminous and deep green in color, fringed with jet-black lashes that were double-rowed, matching her hair, which was so dark, it looked blue in the right light. Her
skin was pale and totally without hue, which contrasted sharply against her dark hair. In short, her appearance was rather startling. On my first day as a teacher
at the on-site school for the city orphanage, Jessie stood out in my history classroom as if a spotlight were on her. Naturally, she sat on her desk rather than
behind it, cradling her notebook in her lap and studiously avoiding the glares and comments of the other students. I quickly called the class to order, giving my best threatening
stares at those students who did not obey me immediately. I called role and learned her name. At first, I assumed that Jessies stature was a debilitating handicap.
